At Abbey Gardens, we believe that nature is the best classroom. Our expansive 300-acre sustainable community hub offers students in Grades 4-8 unique opportunities to connect with the environment, develop essential skills, and understand the importance of environmental stewardship through engaging, hands-on experiences.
Our June program allows students to dive into the wonders of the natural world. Each day is a blend of ecological exploration, outdoor skills training, and recreational activities that not only meet key curriculum goals but also foster a lasting relationship with nature.

A Day of Discovery and Growth
Upon arriving at Abbey Gardens, students will meet our dedicated education team, led by Irene Heaven, affectionately known as "Mama Bear." With 20 years of experience in environmental education and wildlife biology, Irene makes sure each program is both educational and enjoyable.
Students rotate through three engaging activity stations designed to stimulate curiosity and facilitate learning in a relaxed outdoor setting.

Ecological Exploration
At the first activity station, students explore the diverse ecosystems of Abbey Gardens, from our rehabilitated gravel pit to the thriving tall grass prairie. Through interactive games such as “Animal Survival,” students learn about biodiversity, habitat conservation, and our ongoing restoration efforts.
One enthusiastic participant shared, “I noticed they focus on more than just gardening! I experienced a variety of activities in one visit. That kept me interested!” This variety is crucial in holding students’ attention and inspiring a deeper connection to nature.
For example, during “Animal Survival,” students simulate survival scenarios, learning about the needs of different species and the delicate balance of ecosystems. Activities like this showcase that 70% of the planet's land animals live in complex habitats, emphasizing the need for conservation.
Disc Golf Instruction & Play
The second station introduces students to disc golf on our unique 18-hole Disc-overy Trail, designed to highlight the distinct landscapes of Abbey Gardens. This activity blends physical education principles with environmental awareness as students traverse meadows, forests, and the rehabilitated Big Pit area.
This multifaceted experience promotes teamwork and physical fitness. Studies show that children who engage in outdoor activities are 40% more likely to have a positive outlook on life and improved social skills.
Outdoor Skills Development
The third station allows students to learn vital wilderness skills from experienced instructors. This session includes navigation, shelter-building, nature identification, and other practical skills that build resilience and resourcefulness.
By gaining these skills, students learn to appreciate and actively engage with the natural world, empowering them to become responsible stewards of the environment. For instance, when students identify native plants, they understand their role in local ecosystems and how to protect them.
Bridging the Gap Between Learning and Nature
Every part of our program at Abbey Gardens is designed to connect traditional classroom learning with real-world environmental experiences. By immersing students in nature, we help them form a deeper connection to the environment and inspire a lasting commitment to sustainability.
This dual approach enhances academic understanding and practical skills—students who participate in outdoor learning demonstrate a 25% increase in critical thinking skills according to recent studies.
Benefits of Outdoor Learning
Research shows that outdoor learning brings many benefits to students, including:
Enhanced Engagement: Students are more involved in their education when they can explore and interact with their surroundings.
Improved Mental Health: Outdoor activities can alleviate stress and anxiety, improving overall well-being.
Increased Physical Activity: Being outdoors naturally encourages movement, promoting healthier habits.
Strengthened Social Skills: Collaborative activities boost teamwork and improve communication among peers.
These advantages underscore that nature-based education is vital for nurturing the minds and spirits of young learners.
Creating Lifelong Environmental Stewards
Our mission at Abbey Gardens is to inspire the next generation of environmental advocates. Through hands-on experiences, students develop an appreciation for the complexities of nature and learn the significance of sustainability.
By recognizing that every choice can influence the environment, students leave with a sense of responsibility for the natural world.
With exposure to diverse ecosystems and practical outdoor skills, we believe they will carry this knowledge into the future, making informed choices that positively affect their communities and the planet.
